MedCognetics, Inc., a company focusing on medical imaging AI, today and a member of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Partner Network (APN), announced a collaboration with Health Within Reach Foundation (HWRF), a nonprofit striving to bring quality healthcare within reach for the underprivileged, to deploy AI-enabled mobile mammography units in India, bringing critical breast cancer screening services directly to underserved populations.
The initiative, aligned with AWS’s “AI for Good” mission, which supports projects that use artificial intelligence and machine learning to address urgent challenges, introduces some of the first AI-enabled mobile mammography vans in India, designed to reach women in remote villages who would otherwise face significant barriers to care. In many cases, patients must travel two to three days, by train, in order to access screening in major metropolitan areas. With this deployment, screening can now be conducted locally, dramatically improving access and enabling earlier detection.
India’s scale underscores the urgency: in a population of approximately 1.4 billion people - more than half of whom are women - there are only an estimated 800 radiologists who specialize in breast imaging, available nationwide. By integrating MedCognetics’ AI platform directly into mobile units, the program acts as a force multiplier, enabling automated screening in regions with limited infrastructure and a shortage of radiologists.
MedCognetics’ technology is uniquely suited to this challenge. While the platform supports cloud-based environments, HWRF has been able to implement it within the mobile mammography vans using an on-premises, edge-based approach tailored to the realities of delivering care in remote settings. This enables real-time image processing and decision support directly at the point of care, ensuring consistent performance even in environments with limited connectivity. The collaboration between HWRF and MedCognetics is designed to support broader scalability, positioning HWRF to extend this model beyond India and bring AI-enabled screening services to underserved communities worldwide.
“We are developing AI that is impactful, for everyone, everywhere,” said Debasish “Ron” Nag, Chief Executive Officer, MedCognetics, Inc. “This initiative demonstrates how advanced technology can overcome geographic and infrastructure barriers, bringing high-quality care to communities that have historically been left behind.”
“At Health Within Reach Foundation, our mission is to bring essential healthcare services to communities that would otherwise go without,” said Dr. Mudassar Shaikh, Chief Medical Officer, Health Within Reach Foundation. “This collaboration allows us to deliver breast cancer screening directly to women in underserved urban centers and remote rural areas, where early detection can make the difference between life and death. With AI integrated into our mobile units, we can reach more patients, more efficiently, and with greater confidence in the results.”
The collaboration also reflects a broader strategy for MedCognetics: delivering unbiased, scalable AI-driven medical imaging solutions that can operate across any deployment model, whether edge, cloud, or hybrid. Working with organizations like HWRF ensures that the technology is applied where it is most needed.
For the healthcare ecosystem, the benefits are significant. Increasing access to early screening improves patient outcomes, reduces the burden on overstretched healthcare systems, and addresses the global shortage of radiologists, particularly in emerging markets.
This deployment marks a critical step forward in making advanced medical imaging more accessible worldwide and reinforces MedCognetics’ mission to enhance clinical decision-making through intelligent, adaptable AI.
